Identifying hydric soils in a floodplain setting can be challenging. Just helped teach an advanced course in hydric soils for

the Association of Massachusetts Wetland Scientists.  Field site within the active floodplain of the Taunton River in Bridgewater, MA.  Excellent group of attendees who were highly motivated and experienced.  Interesting observations and discussion throughout the day.  Plant communities mostly all dominated by wetland plants, yet soils distinctly different.  When all the pieces are put together — subtle changes in slope, herb layer (ground cover), surface indicators of hydrology — the picture comes into focus.  Good time had by all.
